"A big cause for nervousness on the part of Benda and some of the other Brainerd players was their unfamiliarity with the Lexington park big league diamond. The infield is grass, while the Interstate and Central Minnesota League fields are all dirt infields. To play on closely clipped grass is decidedly different and the balls grounded on grass infields do not have the hop and bounce to them as when hitting the dirt."
The Brainerd Municipal Band made a big hit, even if the Brainerd Baseball Team lost.

"In the annual report of Secretary F.C. Berry, he pointed out that the Minneapolis association is the strongest amateur baseball organization in the country. The secretary pointed out the utter lack of sufficient fields for the baseball leagues, but that nothing could be done to improve conditions until after the war, because all municipal improvements have been dropped until after the end of the war. Mr. Berry also suggested that the Commercial League, the strongest organization in the association, be divided into two classes this year, consisting of the 'simon pure' amateur teams and the semi-professionals."
"The age limit of the class B and C players was changed a bit in order to conform with rules of the National Amateur Baseball association. This year, players 19 or under, will qualify for the 'B' division, while 17 years will be the limit in the smaller league."

1919-9-14 City League managers have had a hard time keeping their lineups intact as their stars are lured away by out-of-town managers. The Commercial League, playing on Saturday, does not have this problem. A proposal: Next year, City League will operate as Twilight League, playing on weekday evenings.

1924-7-25 Mankato may drop out due to disallowed protest
1925-4-18 Salary limit will be enforced.
"Austin decided to have no team this year, due to the lack of encouragement from business men and fans."
Rochester fans are of two minds as to whether they should join league; would not be able to have Swede Risberg.
League application of Mason City was not approved - the Iowa town is too far away.
Albert Lea roster listed. Chuck Wortman is new manager. John Lisy may not play, as the Fort Dodge team of the City League has made him an attractive offer.
    1925-5-03 League preview.
Rochester: "The hospital town is having some difficulty in rounding up the necessary number of home players and has made a request to the league that Outfielders Gilligan and Charney be allowed as home men. A full salaried team has been in vogue here for several years and it has left the town almost bare of good ball players. It is expected that the request will be granted since Rochester has asked for no favors from the league to date and outside men have been allowed to several of the other members."
Also: "The team will be financed for the most part from the sale of books of tickets and the officers have set $3,500 as a mark to shoot at in the sales."
Owatonna is in good financial shape: balance left in treasury from last season, and a splendid response to financial campaign this spring.
Albert Lea has collected $1,500, and $2,500 is in their sights.
1925-6-21 Albert Lea fans organize into corporation - buy ball park
1928-5-01 Chuck Wortman lost to Albert Lea - an employee of Wilson Packing, was transferred to Faribault. Will be replaced at 2b by veteran John Lisy. [Wortman would manage S-M Faribault Fairies]
1929-4-16 Chuck Wortman made Albert Lea manager for 1929.
"Wortman's efforts the first year he was here helped to pull the club out of a hole into which it had fallen after a disastrous season- financially- in the old Iowa-Minnesota loop. The next year, due to league difficulties the club played Independent baseball.
Albert Lea came back into the league in 1927 and with Wortman again as manager they won the pennant from St. James. The latter part of last year Wortman played with the local club at second base but did not manage.
Wortman is one of the flashiest second basemen in the loop and he Is always dangerous at bat and on the bases. He is respected in baseball on and off the field wherever he goes. Wortman on becoming manager this year resigned as a member of the board of directors and Russell Voigt was named to take his place. The selection of Wortman as a manager is entirely satisfactory."

https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/julie-wera/ 1927 NYY (name spelled Werra before he turned pro)
"In July 1921, Wera joined Winona’s top amateur baseball team, the Peerless Chains, sponsored by the Peerless Tire Chain Company, and moved into the lineup at third base.12 “Young Wera is considered the find of the season,” read a newspaper story at the time. “He was picked from the sand-lots by the Chains and developed into a brilliant guardian of the hot corner.”13 Wera likely was thought to be just 16 years old at the time, although he was actually 19.14
Wera continued playing with the Chains while working at the packing plant before leaving Winona in May 1924 to play for a semi-professional team in Wausau, Wisconsin.15 After a successful season in Wausau, Wera made the jump to Organized Baseball that September when he received a tryout with the St. Paul Saints of the American Association and played in four games.16 Wera was brought to the Saints’ attention by Frank Penas, a one-armed umpire who worked games in Winona, among other places, and scouted for the Saints.17"
